Take Off Your Swastika It's Making Me Angry! Take Off Your Swastika It really nauseates me...

about

Backstage at the Cavernous theater of the of the Variety Arts Center, an ancient edifice in downtown L.A. dedicated to preserving the fading glories of vaudeville, a punk group named Red Kross is anxiously waiting to go on. Out in the house, the audience consists of teenagers in their parents' clothing. Only a scattering of mohawks keeps them from looking like extras out of Blue Velvet. But interspersed in this ocean of teenyboppers are the fans of the other performer on the bill.

The lights dim, the crowd roars and the voice on the P.A. says, "Ladies and gentlemen: Frank." A follow spot searches the dusty drapes. Out onto the timeworn stage, pockmarked with the dents of a thousand Indian clubs, strides an androgynous figure no bigger than the palm of your hand (but better, as the old joke goes), her hair cruelly cut, her svelt swimmer's body encased in flopping blue denim. On her feet she sports the latest in combat boots.

The audience gapes. What the hell is it? "The name is spelled with a P-H and a hard C," she announces. "I'm Phranc." The kids howl. And then this tiny daughter of Bilitis proceeds to demolish them. She simply reaches out, grabs the crowd and sticks it in the pocket of her Levis. Now she's about to do the same to you on this, her second album. I won't tell you what you're going to hear other than to say that it's funny and touching and sometimes unsettling. She's a storyteller, a spellcaster, a sorceress, a shayne maidele.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you -- Phranc.
